Who Moved My Cheese

The other day I read Spencer Johnson’s bestselling management book, Who Moved My Cheese.  It’s one of those read-in-one-sitting business fables – a little book with a big moral.  The thing is, this book was a mega-hit and honestly the story is, well, obvious.

It’s a story of getting out of your own way, feeling the fear and taking action anyway.  Watching for change and going with the flow when it happens.  Not letting yourself become paralyzed by fear of the unknown future.

Two things I learned from this book that I find fascinating

1) People tend not to think of themselves as being afraid of change, but believe many others around them are.  Big case of denial here?  Are we disconnected from the feelings that we do not recognize this kind of fear in ourselves?   Or do we see “being afraid” as such a symbol of failure that we disassociate from it?

2) This little story was a big-time bestseller.  This says to me that people hunger for simple metaphors that remind us that we can overcome fear and move on to something that makes us happy.  Reading the story may be a “duh!” moment, but in that duh is a reconnection to our innate knowledge of what is true.

Regarding not letting ourselves become paralyze by fear…see my next post for more commentary on THAT one!

‘Til later!
